rTMS is a newer therapeutic brain stimulation treatment that now has a strong established evidence base in the treatment and management of Major Depression. There is a further developing evidence base and ongoing research for utilising rTMS in several other Psychiatric and Medical disorders viz Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Pain disorders, PTSD, auditory hallucinations in Schizophrenia.
rTMS is classified as a Type C procedure, which means it is intended to be provided as an outpatient/non-admitted service for the majority of patients. It can be delivered safely and effectively on this outpatient basis.
However, there are specific clinical criteria and based on psychosocial circumstances rTMS is also recommended in Inpatient settings , which however needs a prior assessment to be completed and availability of suitable Private health Cover.
